Bat For Lashes 'Daniel' Free Music Video and Interview

Natasha Khan is the driving force behind Bat for Lashes. Born of a Pakistani father and English mother, Khan graduated from university in Visual Arts and Music. She cites Susan Hiller and Steve Reich as influences on her work in experimental music. Whilst she was working as a nursery school teacher, Khan began to work on material for her first album. Drowned in Sounds Records released her first single, 'The Wizard', digitally. The single was released on vinyl on her own label, She Bear Records. Natasha Khan's first album was released in 2007. She had signed for Echo Records, and her stable mates were Feeder and Roisin Murphy of Moloko. The album, 'Fur and Gold' was released in September 2006. A further change of record company saw Bat for Lashes sign for Parlophone. 'Fur and Gold' was re-released, and this time contained additional material.

Mercury Music Prize Nomination

Similarities have been drawn with Bjork, PJ Harvey and Tori Amos. Her second album, 'Two Suns' has seen further comparison with Stevie Nicks of Fleetwood Mac fame and Dolores O'Riordan of The Cranberries. Bat for Lashes toured America in 2007, and also appeared at Glastonbury in the same year. The album 'Fur and Gold' was nominated as one of the albums of the year as part of the Mercury Music Prize. Bat for Lashes lost out to the Klaxons on this occasion, despite being the favourite to win the award. The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers awarded Khan a prestigious ASCAP Vanguard Award. This resulted in her being asked to perform at the ASCAP showcase in Austin, Texas. The following year, 2008, saw her nominated as one of the breakthrough artists of the year, and she was also one of the nominees for Best British Female at the 2008 Brit awards.

Bat for Lashes have attracted support from some of the most innovative artists of the age, and Thom Yorke of Radiohead and Bjork have both been spotted at Bat for Lashes gigs. In fact, Bat for Lashes were asked to support Radiohead on some of their 2008 tour dates.

'Perfect for Cats', a tribute album to The Cure, featured Khan covering 'A Forest', which had originally been recorded by The Cure in 1980.

In March 2009, Bat for Lashes announced their new line up, which now includes, Charlotte Hathaway, Sarah Jones and Ben Christophers. Bat for Lashes line ups are very fluid, but this announcement coincided with the launch of the new album, 'Two Suns' in April 2009. The first single from the album, 'Daniel', was released in March 2009. Natasha Khan produced the artwork for the album, which included photographs taken on Brighton Beach. She performed the new single 'Daniel', on Radio One's Live Lounge, and in America in the David Letterman Show.
